Border Project

The construction of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SSEZ) Border started in April, 1982 and completed in March, 1985. It starts from Xiaomeisha in the east and ends at Anle Village in the west. The total length is 126 kilometers. There are 8 checkpoints including Nantou, Buji, Meilin, Tongle, Baimang, Shawan, Yantian and Beizaijiao and passageways for farmers( for farmer’s convenience to work on both sides). The patrol way is as long as 90 kilometers with 163 watchtowers and wire netting of 2.8 meters. There are also facilities of electricity, communication and water supply. Now it’s under charge of the seventh group of frontier defense department of Armed police of Guangdong Province. The cost of building checkpoints amounts to more than 1 billion RMB. Its yearly cost adds up to dozens of millions.

The SSEZ Border separated Shenzhen city from mainland China and grows a history of SSEZ. You can say it’s the most important physical remnants of SSEZ and witness of the character and historical identity of Shenzhen city. To look for these, the SSEZ Border is the crucial key.

With the transition of city functions of Shenzhen (from special economic zone to international city), right now the checkpoints of vehicles and people have become nominal. The SSEZ Border disturbs citizens’ lives, and pretty much blocks the transportation of goods and people. It also leads to the inequality of prices inside and outside the Border and costs enormous waste of social resources. Citizens’ voices of deconstructing have become stronger and stronger.

In the past five years, Shenzhen citizens have changed the spatial function of the SSEZ Border quietly by the yearly Mill 100 kilometer’s Walk Campaign. Several thousands of people get together and walk all the way along the 126-kilometer-long SSEZ Border. Citizens share and identify the city by this way.

Besides historical value, areas alongside the SSEZ Border have remained beautiful natural landscape and agriculture culture. The Border Project is improvisation of land art, large installation, sculpture and temporary architecture according to the natural landform, history and culture, like changing checkpoints into temporary hostels, hourly hotels, Bungee Jumping platform, agriculture product market, temples, cinema, museums etc. There are also outdoor projects like skateboarding, car racing, marathon and foot racing etc. It shows our imagination of the SSEZ Border’s development by animation. We hope this can inspire more creativity from Shenzhen citizens who can occupy and use the city border space by their own down-to-earth wisdom.
