INFORMAL CITY?
Opening Reception:
Saturday October 29th 2005, 4 – 6:30 p.m.
Venue:
Zero Field Experimental Art Center, Factory 798 Dashanzi Art District, No. 4 Jiu Xianqiao Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing
Exhibition:
October 30th – November 12th 2005
Tue – Sun, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
The artists will attend the opening ceremony.
A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
We cordially invite you to attend the opening reception of “Informal City?” – featuring new artworks by twelve German and Chinese artists who lived and worked in the Chinese capital for the last four months. This exhibition seeks to present final results as well as work in progress reflecting the impressions and personal experiences of “migrant” artists in the high-speed transformation of this megacity.
As “Beijing Case” curator Gregor Jansen stated:
There are very private, almost intimate references to the rush of change in modern Beijing’s daily lives, as with Echo YinSin Ho, who acoustically and visually recorded a personal heterotopy, starting with the now-deserted house where she was born, or in Ma Yingli’s documentary film, where pensioners describe their move to the suburbs. Mara Kurotschka as a choreographer mirrors the living image of the mundane in her analyses of movements in the city in a wonderfully unpretentious way, and Heike Baranowsky found places where local characteristics came into a specific focus, showing new relationships through her view of them as collages.
Xi Chuan’s look at places of religious worship allows similar meditations, with people expressing their life descriptions differently. Symbols determine Being. Christine de la Garenne and Via Lewandowsky collected misunderstandings and mistakes in the reading of “everyday myths” during their 120 Beijing days- a different culture shock picture book in an artificially functionalized spatial installation. But there are also real, negative margins of urban life such as slums right downtown, shown by Cao Fei and Ou Ning in their “Dazhalan Project”. In a more abstract, but immediately accessible way, Thomas Bayrle turns roadways with Cultural Revolution propaganda photos and Chinese characters into sculpture. Equally legible, due to their use of the written word, are Ingo Niermann’s insightful interviews with people of most varying relationships to Beijing city life, as is Susanne Röckel in her partly satirical, fictional city perambulations on which she takes her readers along.
“Beijing Case” is an artist fellowship program initiated by the German Federal Cultural Foundation in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Peking.
