Hi Cao Fei,

I am so sorry I didn’t get to see you again before you left London. It was fantastic working with you. I think the performances that you realised for London were thoughtful, provocative and fantastic. You have a very clear vision which is so rare and such a pleasure to be part of realising.

So thank s again!

I really, really hope that I see you again soon and it would be great to work with you again one day!

Love to you and Ou Ning

Morecambe Bay Declaration

Co-Director William Wong

In Britain today, from food processing to manufacturing, we can’t do without cheap labour, legal or NOT!

We’re everywhere, from fishing to textiles, construction, hotels, restaurants and electronics.

We’re an invisible force behind the economy, contributing 6.8% to the GDP every year.

We make up the labour market gaps, yet without any rights.

We’re among the most vulnerable, foregoing our employment and human rights.

All we want is a BETTER LIFE.

(Everyone) A BETTER LIFE!

BEAT

Without work permits, we’re totally isolated in this dirty, dangerous, and unregulated underworld.

We clean the streets and alleyways; mob the shiny floor in shopping malls.

Sir, we wait at your restaurant tables.

And sew and stitch the latest fashion wear.

We build your microwaves.

And prepare your ready-made salad.

Why are we here?

Poverty back home.

(Everyone) POVERTY.

BEAT

Out of all Asian workers, there are seventy thousand of us from China.

Most from the Fujian Province, and others from all over the motherland.

We are the young who were laid off by the state owned industries,

Jobless and despondent.

Market economy means low wages for us peasants, if there is a job at all.

Here in Britain, we’re paid three seventy-three an hour.

That’s less than a hundred and fifty Pounds for a forty hour week, and we barely spend more than six quid a week.

To sneak in through your shores, we paid more than sixteen grand!

(Everyone) SIXTEEN GRAND!

BEAT

No matter what we make, we’re far removed from the end result.

In this giant machine, we’re merely the cogs and wheels, faceless.

With little hope, the passage of time we endure through our toil.

We could only do low-pay, temporary and seasonal work, often under terrible conditions.

We could lose our jobs with no warning, no compensation.

Aren’t we treated like animals?

(Everyone) ANIMALS!

BEAT

We sleep ten to a room.

We’re struggling to make money, to save and send it home.

We have no illusions about life in the UK.

Everyday we run the risks of being mugged, arrested and deported; always living in fear.

For those who perished at Morecambe Bay, death is not necessarily as unbearable as the lives they were living.

This sort of tragedy can happen to anyone without an identity.

We ARE being exploited.

You can’t just ignore it.

(Everyone) YOU CAN’T!
