718 (SUN Lei)

Born in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China, 1982. 718 graduated from North China Univ. of Technology with a major in electronic engineering. His background explains his identities as both a synthesizer-maker and laptop musician.

A very prolific artist, 718's styles range from folk music to mysterious, epic-like electroacoustic compositions to even organ music; most of these works have never been released. In 2005, his two albums An (literally means "serenity") and Nowise Assault were released by Subjam Records.

Highlights of his unreleased major works include Bu Yu, Bei Qi, Mei Zhan (for organ) and Pi (read as ‘Pea’ not ‘Pie’, for orchestra and pre-recorded tapes). He also participated in two compilations: The Sound of Silence (Reconfiguration Records) & Landscape.
In 2004, 718 played in several festivals including the “798 Festival”, "Who's Singing in Spring?" Festival and a concert organized by Kwanyin records.

Besides his own compositions, 718 occasionally ...

"...On entering the building a sound installation curated by artist Ou Ning attempts to fill the vast and crumbling remains of Turbine Hall B. Awakening Battersea features the work of a varied collection of Chinese sonic artists including Torturing Nurse, Wang Fan, Zafka and Dead J, who have collectively conjured an hour of sounds that range from street market clatter and chatter to ambient field recordings.

The group, who come together under the moniker Institute of Sound are concerned with the study, composition, presentation and dissemination of ‘geo-sonic phenomena’ – with a particular interest in the relationship between sound and physical spaces. They’ve got their work cut out here, as the temptation is to just stumble forward to take in the vast ruin that opens out before you..."

Author: Admin ]

Author: Admin ]

Got a notice at 16:00 this afternoon from Serpentine Gallery asking me to go to Battersea power station and check the PA system. Wang Changcun's piece was being played when I stepped in, the volume is high and it felt that the space was activated immediately. Bumped into Hans (Ulrich Obrist) and Julia (Peyton-Jones) and they seemed to be stimulated by the sound works, kept saying "exciting". This was the first work installed in the China Power Station exhibition, which includes contemporary art, architecture and sound art. We were playing MP3 files this afternoon, and the sound will be even better when I get the WAVE / AIFF files sent to me from Beijing by Yan Jun and Lawrence R.Y. Li.

Awakening Battersea
A site-specific project by Institute of Sound

More than twenty field-recordists and sound artists from China are commissioned for an one-hour conceptual sound work, based on their respective sonic experience and group discussion. The work will be played back in repeat mode in the Turbine Hall B of Battersea Power Station, the sheer volume of sound waves promises to awaken this hibernating building. Alternative sound sources will be placed on various levels of Battersea. With a generic, China-made multipurpose bird viewing device (which functions both as an 8x telescope and a shotgun microphone) which will be distributed in the hall, the visitors can not only observe the details of the architecture, but also, following a “soundspotting map” we prepare, listen and record the sonic snapshots created by the participating artists as well as the built-in sounds of Battersea (such as the birds and bats ...

Institute of Sound, 2006, Beijing.Photographer: Cao Fei

Institute of Sound (IOS) is a long-term research group focused on the study, composing, presenting and publishing of geo-sonic phenomena. The group consists of sound artists, field-recordists, architects keen on exploring the relationship between sound and physical spaces, and writers interested in the sociological aspect of sound phenomena. With its “sound-as-the-sole-medium” approach, IOS tends to perceive and reflect upon our world with all the non-aural senses shutting down. By collecting and manipulating daily sounds, it attempts to explore the possibilities of sonic narration and the relationship between sound phenomena and the complex social reality. IOS encourages more field-recordists to collect environmental soundscape in China on a regular basis, so as to establish a large-volume sound archive. It will also experiment with alternative modes of distribution and promotion ...
